Fashionistas sure got their fill over the past month, what with Fashion Weeks in New York, Paris, London, Montreal and Vancouver. t was all about spotting trends, attending runway shows, and getting to know the faces behind the brands. What else was on the agenda? Seeking out the designers – like Ada Zanditon, Stella McCartney and more – who are committed to sustainable, ethical and eco practices in the production of their lines. The tag line for the Ethical Fashion Shows hosted in Paris reads, “Notre but: prouver que la mode ethique peut etre a la fois tendance et parteuse de benefices sociaux et environmentaux.” For those of you who are scrambling to remember French vocabulary from high school, they’ve basically stated that their goal is to show that fashion can be trendy while still being ethical, environmental and socially responsible. Sounds like a good goal, non?

What’s better is that the Ethical Fashion Shows presented very wearable collections in the four day trade show with live catwalks. Hosted in the new Docks en Seine building, which is quite a new age architectural marvel itself, the design on design aesthetic worked well, affording designers the space to create interesting and artful exhibits.

With over thirty different designers exhibiting, here are but a few that made my short list:

• A & K Classics
• Ciel
• Ethos Paris
• Shifumi
• Ute Auwarter

Differing from the Green Shows in New York – the Estethica exhibit and Sustainable Show during London Fashion Week – the Ethical Fashion Shows were much more intimate with an educational element. Even the program held information regarding what constitutes an ethical piece of clothing, which was brilliant!

All in all it was a wonderful introduction to not only the local Parisian ethical designers, but many from Peru, India and other parts of Europe. I am confident that as the Ethical Fashion Shows develop, their fashion capital of the world host – Paris – will push their ambiance and presentation forward while keeping the educational segment in tact.

It is usually challenging to fully respond to spring/summer collections as we are just entering into the winter season, but at this year’s London Fashion Week S/S 11 sustainable fashion hit a new high note that transcended temperatures. For the first time ever, LFW gave eco-fashion its own show – The Sustainable Show. Designers as well known as Stella McCartney all the way to industry leaders like People Tree showcased their fashion in a collaborative presentation. Prophetik’s designer Jeff Garner held his own star-studded show, providing one of the best runway shows of the week. Finally, Parisian designer Ada Zanditon wrapped the week up with a show at the On/Off exhibit, and a new title as INNOVATION’s Fairtrade cotton category winner.

London Fashion Week has been host to Estethica – the eco-fashion focused exhibit during LFW for nine seasons, and this year the fashion industry was ready for more! This year, the Sustainable Show took place on day two of LFW and encompassed an assortment of eco-fashion’s best known designers including: Dame Vivienne Westwood’s World’s End Collection, Stella McCartney, From Somewhere, People Tree, Junky Styling, Henrietta Ludgate and Christopher Raeburn, just to name a few.

A collaborative presentation of ethical fashion at its best, the Sustainable Show proved to be a coveted event with a tightly held access list.

The presented looks featured integrated pieces in which designers’ collections complimented one another in a very real ready-to-wear display. The show was rounded up with a procession of t-shirt clad models, each proclaiming a “Death by…” statement.

For all its hype, the show was considerably short. Hopefully the apparent demand and interest in sustainable fashion will prompt a larger presentation for next year.
