In yet another sign that consumers seeking ethical and sustainable fashion choices are indeed influencing brands to become more thoughtful and transparent about their products, fashion powerhouse Michael Kors announced this week it’s removing fur from both the popular Michael Kors and Jimmy Choo labels. The decision came after a recent meeting with PETA spurred by dozens of protests led by the animal rights group.

The brands will fully phase out fur by December 2018, and has plans to achieve its signature look and feel with “luxe” alternatives that don’t involve the horrors of the fur industry.

“This decision marks a new chapter as our company continues to evolve its use of innovative materials,” Michael Kors chief officer John Idol said in a statement. “We now have the ability to create a luxe aesthetic using nonanimal fur.”

The company was recently targeted by PETA over its continued use of fur in a segment of its line, with demonstrators showing up to dozens of the designer’s show. In June, demonstrators thwarted a live interview with Michael Kors at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art with the chant “Michael Kors has blood on his hands.”

“With the advances in faux fur and the introduction of other innovative materials, it’s becoming clear that there is simply no reason to continue using a product that causes so much pain and suffering,” The Humane Society of the U.S. president and CEO Wayne Pacelle said in a statement after the Kors announcement.

Kors’ announcement comes just several months after Gucci made a similar commitment.

Vegan fashion has changed my life–yes, jeans, and shoes, and sweaters have made me a better, more compassionate person.

This article won’t chastise you for wearing leather, try and convert you to veganism, or tell you that you’re somehow inadequate for choosing animal fur over faux. Ultimately, we are all humans who have the ability to make choices – paper or plastic, apple or banana, regular or premium – and reading this won’t take that ability away from you. What it will do (I hope), however, is serve as a platform for discussing all the things vegan fashion has done to not only change my life, but really enrich and enlighten my outlook on the world.

First, what is vegan fashion? It’s clothing, shoes, outerwear, and accessories that are free from animal-based materials, namely leather and suede, wool, silk, or fur. Lots of the clothes we wear are vegan by default: denim, cotton tees and undies, etc.

Fashion, whether it’s vegan or ethical or eco-friendly or not, is a global phenomenon – a process that may start clear across the planet before ever making its way into our closets. And with an impact that broad, it’s important to identify why it matters so darn much. Fortunately, intentional vegan fashion is often a positive process resulting in a product that’s better for everyone involved. And the ways in which it has changed my life, for better or worse, is what we’ll be exploring today.

1. Human Rights Awareness

Sometimes we become so focused on the animals that we forget about the ones who make the production aspect possible – people. Clothing manufacturers’ employees deserve to earn living wages, have safe work environments, and perform under humane working conditions, which in many cases of fast fashion, are completely overlooked. I’ve come to the conclusion that the founders of  ethical, and fair trade vegan clothing companies are all around more compassionate and aware of such problems, and less concerned about the company’s bottom line. Of course, that doesn’t apply to all vegan products, but there are those brands out there that do consider these factors, and that makes all the difference.

2. Save More Money

This may not seem true at first glance, considering that vegan clothing from ethical retailers and manufacturers can sometimes be more expensive that their counterparts, but because I’m ultimately more selective about what I spend my money on, opting for quality over cheaper, fast fashion quantity, then I’m not faced with the cheap, disposable factor of the items I buy. Not only that, but synthetic belts, shoes, handbags, fur accented coats, and other clothes and accessories made from faux materials sometimes actually cost less than those made from the real thing.

3. Trickle Down Effect

Adopting vegan-only fashion had what I like to call a trickle-down effect on my choices, in that the idea sort of naturally influenced my way of thinking in other areas of life. Going cruelty-free with my toiletries, makeup, hair dyes, cleaning solutions, and other products was a direct result of my fashion choices. It only made sense to “go all the way” forcing me to explore new territory that required a lot of research and discovery, but was incredibly rewarding nonetheless. Today, identifying brands and products that are acceptable for my lifestyle is easier than ever, like second nature. It has made the journey worth the initial work because I feel better about my choices and what I put on my body.

4. Sadness, But Also Compassion

I’ve seen the undercover videos, I’ve read the books, I’ve watched the documentaries, and although you can’t believe everything you see or hear, there’s a lot of truth to what goes on in the leather and wool industries, the fur trade, and more. It’s a sad reality for the animals we use for fashion and it really bothers me. Not only do they experience extreme suffering, but with appalling revelations publicly surfacing about China’s dog fur trade, there’s no way of knowing whether the animal is actually someone’s beloved pet. Anonymous or named, any animal being harmed makes me sad, but also knowing that they’ve suffered only compounds my feelings, resulting in a whole lot of compassion for the gentle, unassuming beings that share this planet with us.

5. New Discoveries

During my research into textile alternatives to animal-derived materials, I have been exposed to technological advances and innovative techniques that have produced some of the most unique and beautiful “fabrics” I’ve ever seen. This has opened my eyes to the future of both the regular and vegan fashion industries, with high hopes that one day famous designers will opt for the innovative product rather than the traditionally high-end product that so often require the use of animals. I believe that adopting this principle will not only set a new standard but it will also appeal more readily to the progressive generations to come.

Pythons, lizards and crocs, oh my! Accessories made of exotic skins have never been hotter. But for those of us who refuse to wear the real thing, this trend leaves us cold. And when the alternative is an embossed plastic “snakeskin” bag of questionable origin destined to become landfill fodder, well… What’s a girl to do? Raven Kauffman has the answer.

LA-based designer Raven Kauffman,whose bewitching couture clutches have been spotted in the hands of Drew Barrymore, Dita von Teese and current Oscar nominee Amy Adams, has created a line of luxe faux-skin accessories that are completely swoon-worthy. And they’re vegan. Not only are they eco-friendly, they are also sustainable; Kauffman’s Everyday Exotics are investment-quality pieces that, unlike their poorly constructed fast-fashion counterparts, will stand the test of time in both style and craftsmanship.

“The Everyday Exotics line came about 4 years into my life as a handbag designer”, Raven says, “I knew that Stella McCartney had a strong following for her vegan bags, which have a certain elegance and sophistication to them. I love the look of exotic hides, but never felt comfortable working with them personally. Any fake crocodile or snake that I had seen up until this point was pretty cheap looking. It was as though the manufacturers had to overcompensate for the fact that it was fake by making it crazy colors and adding tons of cheap hardware. I saw making the Everyday Exotics material as a challenge to bring true sophistication to the vegan market, and give the consumer something very special and unique that they could only get if they bought a VERY expensive real exotic skin bag.”

Looking back, it makes perfect sense that Raven Kauffman would produce designs that showcase the intricate beauty of exotic animal skins with absolute reverence for the creatures themselves. Her childhood was a charmed one: her mother, a biochemist, cultivated and curated orchids in a 20,000 square foot greenhouse at their 1703 Pennsylvania farmhouse and her father was a clothing designer who later delved into historic preservation. Kauffman spent her days experimenting with beautiful colored pencils and watercolors, tending to farm animals, collecting tadpoles and other squirmy specimen from their pond (and placing the little stowaways in Mason jars underneath her bed) learning romance languages and relishing in a Waldorf education on a nearby dairy farm.

Inspired by scattered glimpses of Jacques Cousteau on NOVA, Kauffman wanted to be a marine biologist when she grew up, even studying bio-chemistry at Cornell (though she was offered a scholarship to study metalsmithing and jewelry making at Vassar). She designs in a way that exhibits a heightened sensitivity and understanding of nature–she approaches her work with the head of a scientist and the heart of an artist.

“The rubber ‘skins’ are cast and finished by hand by a team of skilled artisans, and the finishing process is similar to what is used in the very high end leather industry,” she says. “The attention to detail and the amount of labor that goes into every piece is astounding – sometimes 12 individual processes happen for certain colors and finishes, and no two skins are exactly alike.”

Aside from runway-ready clutches and shoulder bags in supple faux crocodile and python, the Everyday Exotics line also includes sculptural cuff bracelets made from reclaimed brass.  “The process of making the jewelry goes right back to my early love of metal smithing… Also, after I met the husband and wife team behind the business that casts them for me, I was in love and had to find a way to work with them. The luster that they are able to achieve on their pieces is astounding. No plating is involved, so the environmental impact is very minimal.”

The success of Everday Exotics has encouraged Raven Kauffman toward expansion–she’s currently experimenting with reclaimed woods and stone veneers. The focus remains on quality, no matter what the medium: “I think about making objects that are heirlooms and less disposable so that I can leave less waste behind for my children to contend with,” says Kauffman. “I’m tired of the theory that you can only build a big commercially successful brand if you take your manufacturing overseas. I see myself being a big part of this movement of bringing creativity back to the U.S. .manufacturing scene.”

Finally, veganism is being talked about in the mainstream. But it’s more than just a diet. When is vegan fashion going to get the attention it deserves?

There’s a list. Mike Tyson. Ex-presidents and ex-vice presidents. Talk show hosts. A-list movie stars and musicians. And the latest to take the vegan diet plunge? Beyoncé and Jay Z. Well, almost. The couple is on a three-week vegan diet bender. It’s good for business. They get even more publicity (because they need it, right?) and likely drop a few pounds. Vegans get the glory of adding more super-celeb names to the roster, even if it only lasts a few weeks. Vegan restaurants can boast visits from the couple. Sort of. Because with only three weeks to kale it up, Beyoncé failed in week one: She walked into a vegan restaurant wearing fur.

Mrs. Shawn Carter, now there are 99 problems—and well. Huh. Maybe it’s not your fault. It is that missing link about “veganism” that we don’t talk about nearly enough these days. The one Bill Clinton probably overlooks, too. The one Mike Tyson might miss if he’s not looking carefully. It’s the animals that are now your shoes, your belt, your sweater, those hideous UGG boots. And, yes, Beyoncé, in that unspeakable dead animal wrapped around your collar like you’re Nanook.

Perhaps the reason we don’t talk all that much (yet) about the importance of vegan fashion is that we’re so thrilled that the vegan diet is getting so much recognition. Without a doubt, it’s the biggest battle—more animals are killed for food than in any other industry.  And chances are—or it used to be, anyway—once you realize the horrors animals raised for food endure, the blurry reality of the other ways animals are (ab)used begin to come into focus too. But with so much attention being placed on the physical benefits of dropping meat, eggs and dairy from our diet, we’re no longer talking as much about the benefits to the animals. Suffering has taken a backseat to slimmer waistlines, reduced LDL levels and a decrease in methane gas production. We promote the benefits of plants more comfortably than we talk about the tragic fact that pigs are smarter than dogs, but we lock them in cages so small they can’t even turn around. And then we kill and eat them.

Choosing to not eat animals is actually pretty easy. Fruits and vegetables are abundant. Most major cities now boast at least one vegan restaurant and countless vegan items on restaurant menus. But try to buy a well-made pair of boots or a handbag that aren’t leather. Or a sweater that isn’t wool. There certainly are options out there, and the vegan fashion industry is taking off (NYC’s Fashion Week saw the first vegan fashion show last year), but as an industry, it still has big steps towards seeing the success vegan food has.

But fur? Really? Do we really still need to discuss how totally awful fur is? How are you going to explain it to your daughter? Even meat-eaters are known to find it offensive. I get it, Beyoncé. You’re BEYONCÉ. And it’s winter (almost, technically). But this isn’t the 1940s. And you were in Los Angeles, not Iceland. Are you really a woman who needs to feel beautiful wrapped in the dead body of another animal? You’re the best-selling, most beautiful woman in music today. You rocked the Super Bowl halftime show. You’re married to a mogul. Can’t you give the animals a break?

Most of the fur sold in the U.S. comes from China where there are no penalties for animal abuse. More than a billion rabbits, two million cats and hundreds of thousands of dogs are tortured for their fur in China every year. Fur farms are some of the most crammed and filthy conditions that animals such as fox, mink and chinchilla endure before they’re painfully electrocuted to death so as to not bloody up their precious pelts. Then there’s the seal slaughter in Canada where babies are brutally bludgeoned for their coats.

Fur may look clean and pristine. It’s easy to see only the softness and beauty we love in the animals who wear it naturally. But like wool, suede and leather, fur is the product of industries that fail to see the suffering of animals as anything more than just the cost of doing business.

Fashion is, more often than not, excessive and indulgent. Like food can be. But over the last few decades, we’ve begun to shift our diets. Savoring the flavor of simple ingredients. We’ve turned our focus locally to the freshest foods. It’s easier to eat a vegan diet when your plate is full of seasonal plant-based ingredients. Applying that same approach to fashion isn’t just easy. It’s just as necessary.
