Ever felt like the only person who can’t pull off a red lip? The rouge pout may be a classic, but there’s an art to finding the right red lipstick shade that brings out your inner siren.

As with any bold look, a lot of it comes down to confidence. Don’t wear a lip color because it looks great on your friend, or you’ve seen Angelina Jolie sporting it – choose a shade you feel comfortable in and rock it in a way only you can.

Start with baby steps. If you’ve avoided a red lip up until now, do a little experimenting with sheer shades first and go from there; going red doesn’t always need to be a statement.

While there are no rules when it comes to red lipstick, using your skin tone as a guideline will help you find the most flattering shades. A basic rule of thumb is those with yellow and warm undertones will look particularly great with orange-based reds, while cooler skin tones should veer towards blue-based shades. Neutral undertones? Lucky you, because anything goes!

There’s a new smokey makeup look on trend, but it has nothing to do with eyes.

The latest face feature people are “smoking up” is their lips.

The look isn’t as out there as one would think. That’s probably because the brand that just came out with the Smokey Lip Kit is no stranger to making interesting lipstick looks people love.

The product turning heads

Lipstick Queen started selling two Smokey Lip Kits in late August—just in time for fall beauty season. Each kit contains a full coverage lipstick shade and a shimmery black lipstick.

Make your own

This look is quite similar to what many young women were wearing in the ‘90s. However, it looks a lot classier—those gold flecks!—and branded.

If you want to recreate this look on the cheap—as in about $16-17 instead of $35—try mixing and matching NYX’s Matte colors, which are bright and vibrant, with its Wicked line, which has a subtle shimmer.

Or give my favorite combo a whirl: combine NYX’s Black Macron lipstick with its light gold or bronze Wicked lipstick. The look is dark, fun and, yes—smokey.

This beetroot lip gloss recipe is a love letter to nature. It is so beautiful, and not only on your skin. You’ll surely want to eat it all up!

One of the best beauty tips I was ever given was: if you can’t eat it, don’t put it on your skin. Unfortunately, the thought of eating skin creams, lotions, or  make-up makes most of us cringe. And it should. Most cosmetics out there are dangerous to eat, and the fact that we automatically pair them with artificiality is only testament to how ingrained toxic beauty products are in the market and hence, in our lives. We were raised on the notion of cosmetics being good enough for the outside, but not for the inside. But with the skin absorbing 60 percent of what’s put on it, haven’t we been ingesting our beauty products all along?

While there are plenty of natural, organic beauty products on the market, nothing beats the quality, care, and conscientiousness of homemade versions. The following beetroot lip gloss recipe is sensational. It not only infuses your lips with all-natural, vegetable-based pigments, but also leaves your pucker moisturized, glistening, and lip-smackin’ delicious!

Beetroot Lip Gloss Recipe

Makes 40 ml

Ingredients

• ½ teaspoon beeswax
• 1 teaspoon coconut oil
• 3 teaspoons castor oil
• 2 teaspoons jojoba oil
• A few drops vitamin E oil
• ½ teaspoon vegetable glycerin
• 1 teaspoon beetroot powder

Directions

Stir the beeswax, coconut oil, castor oil, jojoba oil, and vitamin E oil in a saucepan over low heat. Remove the saucepan from the heat once the oils have melted. Let cool, while occasionally stirring.

Meanwhile, combine the vegetable glycerin and beetroot powder together in a separate small bowl. Once evenly combined, whisk the beetroot powder mixture into the saucepan mixture until smooth and viscous. Let cool.

Spoon into small 10-ml plastic jars. Seal with a lid and carry with you and use as needed.

And I know (I can feel your looks of skepticism from my Kansas office) that black seems like a risky color choice, but it isn’t. All you have to do to pull off this unconventional color is keep everything else on your face simple and your overall color-scheme bright.

What Not to do When You Wear Black Lipstick

1. I love thick eyeliner and the cat-eye look as much as the next beauty writer, but if you want your face to remain open and bright, skip the liner when you wear black lips. The awesome thing about rocking black lip color is that you can pretty much nix all other dramatic makeup.

2. If you don’t want people to think you’re trying to look like a mistress of the night, stay away from wearing all-black attire. Sure, you’ll look sleek, but prepare yourself for the inevitable side-eye glances to come flooding your way.

3. Don’t keep mentioning it. I don’t know about you, but whenever I feel weird about something I’m wearing, I tend to point it out, making my look more dramatic than I ever intended.

What to do When You Wear Black Lipstick

1. To make your lips pop, all you have to wear is minimal mascara, BB cream, and light blush. Style your hair however you want, but I tend to think that a messy ‘do or a sleek ponytail accentuate this lip-look.

2. Wear a splash of color somewhere on your person. Sure, you can wear black boots and a black skirt, but pair your mono bottom half with a red, golden, or deep green shirt.

3. I’ve worn black lipstick out a lot lately and I can tell you that the one thing you should never leave home without when strutting the street with this look is your confidence.

Black lips aren’t a common look, but it’s a really cool look. If you strut around with a smile on your face and your head held high, people will be more apt to take in your look and appreciate your fashion-forward statement.

Instead of starting with a makeup trend and applying it directly to your face, start with what you’ve got and choose makeup that will complement your features. Your eye color, for instance, is an important benchmark in determining other makeup colors, from your shadow down to your lips, that will present your features in the best way possible. 1. Brown eyes
