Newsweek’s Green Ranking List

Who’s the greenest of them all?

That’s the question that researchers at Newsweek magazine have been asking over the past 18 months during their quest to create the inaugural NEWSWEEK Green Rankings list.

Assisted by KLD Research & Analytics, Trucost, and CorporateRegister.com, they have analysed and ranked the environmental performance, policies, practices and reputations of the S&P 500 largest US companies.

The results, published in a 12-page special section in the September 28th issue of Newsweek (and also online at Newsweek.com), make for interesting reading.

Technology companies dominated the top of the list while energy, utility and coal-mining companies sat primarily at the bottom …

5 Natural Ways to Fight the Flu

tea

The flu is already spreading like a Malibu wildfire in my Bay Area community with dozens of kids out the first few weeks of school and contaminated parents unable to play nurse.

It’s going to happen, no way of avoiding it all together, but there are some simple steps to build immunity and combat the spreading of germs at home.

Some people opt for the influenza vaccine, which the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says protects against the three main flu strains causing the most illness during the season. …

The Devil Wears Fur and Her Hurt on Her Sleeve

septemberissuewintour

Welcome to The September Issue, a frockumentary chronicling the genius behind the fattest ever edition of Vogue, weighing in at over four pounds, reaching 13 million readers and boosting the sinking morale of the $300-billion global fashion industry.

I don’t know about you but I don’t like my documentaries contrived any more than my fashion. Albeit entertaining, this one by R.J. Cutler smacks of high level spin and pretense.

Adding to the “entertainment value” was an art-versus-bottom dollar subplot pitting the painfully bored Vogue chief Anna Wintour against brilliant, model-turned-photo stylist …

Non-GMO Project Brings Transparency to Organic Foods

fluffy stem macro

People buy organic foods for many reasons: their health, better taste, a desire to keep pesticides and herbicides out of our air, water and soil and a conviction that buying organic is one way to eat GMO-free.

One of the big problems with GMOs is that non-GMO crops can be contaminated through pollen drift. The fact that the organic field of soybeans used to make your organic soymilk could contain genetically modified material from a neighboring farm hasn’t been a possibility that most organic food producers …

Ecosalon Recipes: Seasonal Eating from the Farmers’ Market: Baked Apples Stuffed with Figs, Honey & Almonds

apples

Arkansas Black, Honeycrisp, Gravenstein, Braeburn, Northern Spy, McIntosh, Gala, Empire, Winesap. It’s heaven for apple lovers this time of year.

The great thing about apples is that different varieties grow all over the country – from California to Kentucky. Mostly I just like to eat them, but they are great for desserts, too. Not up for baking a pie? Here’s an easy, healthful, baked apple dessert that’s special enough for company and perfect for Rosh Hashanah (next year anyway!):

Amy Butler Bucharest Bedding Give-Away

buch

We have long sung the praises of Midwestern textile designer, Amy Butler, who introduced an exotic, Indian-inspired organic bedding collection of five designs this year. She even rolled out rugs to match!

The lovely and much needed bedding (still can’t find organic in many of my favorite haunts) includes 400-thread count sheeting, elegant embroidery and paisley flourishes woven without harmful dyes.

Among my faves is the Bucharest motif (above) with patterns found in Romanian embroidery and the flourishes of formal gardens. While modern and bold, the charcoal gray and ivory palette …

Ag-Caustic! Battling Toxic Compost Giveaways in San Francisco

compost

At first, it seems extremely eco-friendly, the biannual Compost Giveaway Events every fall and spring in San Francisco hosted by the city’s Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC).

Residents are offered free compost to produce soil for community and school gardens and local backyards. It’s the green and organic thing to do.

The problem is the mulch isn’t made of food scraps and manure but a combination of toxic sewage sludge from waste water treatment, green waste, yard waste and wood chips.

What’s in sewage sludge? Stuff that’s foul and harmful to people and …

Notes from the Underground

Anna Korte of AK Vintage, me and Gretchen Jones of Mothlove meeting face to face for the first time during NYC Market Week

I just got back from selling at D&A during New York City’s Market Week and am tired. Like, I can’t get out of bed, don’t want to talk to another designer or buyer dry-heaving in the toilet tired.

It wasn’t because I spent the past week enclosed in a 10×10 space presenting clothing lines to legions of stuffy buyers or entertaining press and new friends over cocktails, it …
