7 Retro Surf Style Ideas to Create Your Own Surf Shack

Create a retro surf style abode.

Create your own surf style beach shack with these surfing inspirations.

I’ve been a fan of surfing and surf style and culture ever since I was an impressionable kid in the 4th grade who read Gidget (a 1957 book that turned into a series of movies and a TV show that starred Sally Field). I followed that up by seeing “The Endless Summer,” a 1966 documentary about a couple of surfers who roam the world looking for waves. Later, I got into surf music like Dick Dale, The Surfaris and The Chantays.

Even though I have never surfed a single day in my life (not coordinated enough to keep myself from drowning), I have since been obsessed with surf culture. One of these days I will make it to Hawaii to watch big wave surfing and live the dream. In the meantime, I must be content with watching surf documentaries, reading The Surfers Journal and watching surfing videos on ESPN.

That love of surfing and its retro surf style and culture has really stuck with me. There’s something really meaningful that I picked up paying attention to all that surfing culture as a kid and that’s an understanding that the responsibility for caring for the environment lies with us, and that nature should be honored, valued and respected.

With summertime almost here, it seemed appropriate to share a roundup of retro surf style for those of you who may be into surfer culture as well. Whether adding some surf-inspired touches to your home or decorating your beach cottage, enjoy these surf style decor ideas, and catch some great waves!
