A garden house is a home that reflects the gardener within. And so garden furniture may well furnish the house, or at least parts of it. Interior garden furniture makes a design statement about the environment the garden lover wishes most to be in – the garden – and shows off the carefree way in which license is taken to bring the outdoors in. The initial impetus may be a matter of economics: simple patio furniture like a small metal sidewalk table and chairs can be quite inexpensive and yet fit the bill for immediate furniture needs.
Or it may be a chance inspiration out of necessity: a rickety camp table will hold extra books for the moment. The first step can also be a luxurious indulgence, a commissioned dining table crafted of the finest wood and stone or an antique wrought-iron chaise lounge to serve as a sofa. Whether begun for love or for money, the payoff for such resourcefulness may surprised you and open new horizons of interior decorating: go ahead and install a porch swing indoors if it pleases you. Even a simple watering can used in place of a traditional vase helps to bring the sunny spirit of gardening into your home, no matter the season.
A garden chair in the living room, cozy to the fireplace, backlit by the sun coming in through the tall windows that open onto the garden, invites a restful pause. It’s a gardener’s indoor spot to perch, just for a moment, as you would in the garden. Not so cushy that you would sink in and forget your chores, it’s comfortable enough for you to relax and admire that just-trimmed topiary or a flowering plant placed in the sun’s rays.
