Terry Wary

-

I’m constantly on the hunt for organic, plush towels with the right texture and absorbency to please the belligerent band of bathers in my house.

My girls, eight and eleven, request the largest towels available, deeming me "stingy" if I wrap them with terry in the bath size, rather than the sheet size that meets their luxury spa standards. My husband dislikes fluffy monogrammed towels in the master bath that look pretty but lack absorbency. In his case, size doesn’t matter.

It’s worse than the three bears porridge saga when it comes to finding the towel that is juuust right.

I think I may have struck Goldy with the Pristine Planet web site which directs me to a variety of eco-friendly cotton bath towels, including the generous sheet size collection from TerraLunaSol Products for natural family living. ($43.50 per sheet). These oversize beauties will leave you high…and dry!

For those of you opting for sustainable bamboo weaves for little bathers, try the bath towel sets from Pumpkin Doodle ($38) and Sea Glass Organic ($34.95). I have to say I also love the knit-like allure of the Coyuchi Colored Bath Towels ($5.50-$44.00) from A.R.E. Naturals.

Care for organic cotton towels is also important, so that they strike the dual balance of softness and absorbency. Pristine Planet takes the guesswork out of finding safe, biodegradable detergents (including green brands for delicates) with a laundry list of excellent products, all non-toxic, biodegradable and made without animal testing.

My family is allergy-prone, so I also look for hypoallergenic formulas in detergents. Among my favorites is Non Toxic Laundry Detergent ($29.95) from Allergy Relief Center. It contains active oxygen to lift stains and sodium citrate to eliminate the graying and dinginess resulting from hard water minerals clinging to organic cotton. For rug rats and children, try the Sweet Pea detergent by Caldrea ($17) which is gentle but mighty in doing its job. These products cost more than brand names that claim they are " non toxic" but some of those cleaners still leave my family itchy and irritated, undermining the calming effect of a soothing soak.
