Vervain is a potent herb with a broad array of medicinal uses. Use this herb wisely and follow your intuition because taking too much of it can cause vomiting; moderate intake should cause no problem. Vervain’s bitterness, however, makes it a great liver tonic and cleanser.
Vervain tea (1-3 teaspoons of the dried herb per cup) is taken to strengthen the nervous system, helping to alleviate stress related headaches and migraines, insomnia, tension and depression. Vervain also promotes sweating and can be used to reduce a fever.
Pregnant women should definitely avoid vervain because it stimulates the uterus and can cause contractions. A woman in labor, however, may benefit from this stimulating action. Women who are breastfeeding may also benefit because vervain promotes lactation.
