Lace abounds for fall and winter, and while I want to embrace the fabric, I find that too often designers just don’t get it right. While veteran houses such as Dolce & Gabbana (shown above – sadly, not green) frequently hit the mark, the up-and-comers frequently fall short. I prefer lace as an accent in subtle detail versus overt sex appeal or the opposite extreme – looking like Grandma’s doilies.
I was confronted head on with this quandary as I perused the wares at the BellJar boutique in San Francisco. There I discovered Kittinhawk, an eco-friendly clothing and accessories brand by designer Allysun Dutra that uses only vintage and recycled materials, which are all handmade in the city.
Dutra’s mission is to be eco-friendly and sustainable without compromising style (which couldn’t make us happier). Coining her collection as “wearable collages of fabric that reflect a highly conceptual design aesthetic,” I can’t help wondering if I’m too conservative and prudish for her look…or if her styles really are a lot of lace misplaced. What do you think?
Looking good?

Over the top!
