Ask Bonnie: Tips for Going Green Gracefully (Laundry)

-

A reader recently wrote to us with the following question:

How do I cut back on washing clothes and dry cleaning without offending my co-workers with my, um, fragrance? This is out of concern for the environment, not loathing of doing laundry, of course.

The availability of energy-efficient washers and dryers has changed how I might have answered that question in the past (note image). Replacing older energy guzzlers in the laundry room – and the kitchen, too – with Energy Star certified appliances may be the biggest step in the right direction you can take. (Here is an excellent guide to purchasing an eco-friendly laundry system.)  Utility companies in many states offer rebates at purchase that make this option more affordable than ever.

With the demise of my 20-year-old Kenmore duo, I researched the highest rated brands for eco-efficacy and made my choice for a front loading washer and dryer. The wonderful bonus that I wasn’t expecting was cleaner, brighter clothes, many more fabric and end use settings than ever before, a place to fold clothes on top and blessed quiet from the laundry room. I can’t recommend these appliances enough. When you start shopping, you’ll notice that design and color choices abound. Like so many other eco purchases, going green with style is the way to go.
