I’m not quite sure how I’d react if a giant orangutan jumped me at lunch and swiped my chopsticks. But that’s almost what happened last week at Microsoft Corp.’s Beijing headquarters as reported in the Wall Street Journal.

The man in the monkey suit was an activist from Greenpeace who is helping to bring attention to the 63 billion pairs of disposable chopsticks churned out by China’s chopstick factories each year. This is just one of the latest eco-issues that has a rising number of environmentalists in China rallying together.

This is a great example of an everyday object that can easily be greened up (like switching plastic grocery bags out for a chic tote). These small changes add up to a big impact! I didn’t even realize that by using the pretty lacquer chopstick set we have at home instead of taking the disposable chopsticks from our favorite Chinese restaurant, I could be making an earth-friendly statement. (“Ape suit” just isn’t on my wish list.)

Here we’ve assembled a collection of chopsticks from these clever folding chopsticks made by Brunton (top) to this fancier cloisonne chopstick set available from Two Stix and an array of others to help you get inspired.
