Modern and elegant are not the first words that come to mind when thinking about old scooter tires, but this TransNeomatic Bowl succeeds in making an old rubber ring a thing of beauty.
The bowl is part of the Design With Conscience project by Artecnica, whose goal is to "promote self-sustaining communities of skilled artisans in underdeveloped countries." The bowls were designed by Estudio Campana and each one is handmade by the skilled hands of Hai Tai weavers in rural Vietnam. The materials consist of re-used scooter tires saved from landfill and natural wicker. To complete the collaboration, each piece is packaged in a reusable drawstring bag created by disadvantaged Vietnamese youths.
In case you are concerned about serving up chips and dip in an old scooter tire that’s been cruising the markets of Hanoi, not to worry – each tire is thoroughly steam cleaned to remove all dirt, then coated in an eco-friendly, non-toxic, water-based solution which seals and protects the tire. Available for purchase through Modern Poverty.
