Green is the new platinum. Credit card companies, seeing a golden opportunity, have jumped on the green bandwagon and are offering credit cards that let you channel a percentage of your spending towards saving the planet.
You choose the green card that supports your cause, be it saving the whales, offsetting carbon emissions, or perhaps supporting the World Wildlife Fund or the Sierra Club. Every time you swipe and sign, a small portion (around 1%) will be donated to your green cause of choice. Be aware, however, that most “green” credit cards often have a higher interest rate, which isn’t a problem if you’re able to pay off the balance each month. But get into a little financial trouble and that higher interest rate will definitely hurt. Finding the right green card can take a some research. Luckily, credit card.com has put together a useful interactive display to help you get started. All you have to do is click on each of the floating credit cards to find out what they environmental cause they are supporting.
Of course, not having a credit card at all might be the greenest thing you could do. Let’s face it. The credit card companies might call these cards green, but until we make sure to buy only earth-friendly goods, we’re living on a borrowed dime.
