Eco Style West Vol. 16

Sustainable style news from EcoSalon’s West Coast fashion correspondent.

Pedal Pushers — Portland eco label Nau’s new line of stylish cycling wear launched just in time for the start of the Tour de France, but this collection is more urban cool than spandex spangle. Featuring men’s and women’s vintage-inspired pieces made from sustainable materials, the ‘Pedal’ collection is available online. The line’s recycled polyester ‘Motif’ pack illustrates the design’s ingenious functionality, it includes a built-in hydration sleeve and shoulder straps padded with recycled wool. Joining new bike fashion lines from Outlier and Levi’s, the clothing is designed for biking commuters who want to arrive at the office fresh, unwrinkled and ready to put their work lives in high gear.

Fashion Fugitives — Head to Fort Center Festival Pavilion for the 4th Annual San Francisco Renegade Craft Fair this weekend. The best Bay Area handmade crafts and the creative crafters who make them will be there to inspire you out of your mass retail fashion rut. With interactive workshops, local independent vendors and a curated store of artist’s art and accessories, there’s plenty of craftiness to go around. Food, beverages and libations will also be available this Sat Jul 9 11am – 7pm.

Tan Terrific — Chocolate and suntans don’t usually go together unless you’re an Oompa Loompa, which is the same shade of orange my fair skin turns when I use self tanners. Not to mention how downright dangerous the ingredient list reads to me. So I was excited to discover Santa Monica-based Chocolate Sun Organics and find the golden ticket to a sunless suntanned look. Using the highest quality Dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which is a natural ingredient derived from the sugar of a beet as their active tanning ingredient, the line is free of the unpleasant chemical smell we associate with fake tanners. The proprietary blend includes botanicals, essential oils and herbs and uses grapefruit seed extract as the only preservative. If you can’t make it to their spa for a customized treatment, treat yourself to a healthy natural tan at home with their product line available at the Spirit Beauty Lounge.
