In a global display of solidarity, over 800 groups worldwide will be gathering at 11 a.m. (your) local time, tomorrow (June 26), to join hands on a beach (or bridge!) to send a message to big oil and busted government that the current policy on deep water offshore drilling is, in a word, unacceptable.
Sponsored by over 25 NGOs, the goal is to create a massive day of citizen action to send a message to our leaders that we as a world do not accept the kind of risk involved in mining for oil off our coasts.
What we’ve been witness to in the past several months is unprecedented. All the kings horses and all the kings men can’t put the gulf coast back to together again. Some call it a turning point for the renewable energy argument, some call it an ‘incident’ but what’s clear is this: humans have created an environmental marine disaster on a scale that we didn’t even believe possible, and what has unfolded is a slap in the face reminder that money can only do so much to mitigate a crisis. Never before in human history have we been witness to such an overwhelming catastrophe, where we are so incredibly helpless as a species to stop. And why? Arrogance.
Get off your buns on June 26th, 2010 and take a stand. Stand with your community and show that the risk to our environment posed by offshore drilling is not worth it. Greed and hubris can not win; and the only thing between victory and defeat is your voice.
Check out Hands Across The Sand to find a demonstration in your area. If you’re tweeting, check and use hashtag #joinhands. SF locals can meet up with our editor-in-chief, Sara, and some of the team at Crissy Field; wherever you are, find a beach or bridge and participate!
