Harrison Ford, Your Watches Make Me Feel Dirty

-

Hard to say “No,” or not believe anything coming from this handsome face, but Harrison Ford wants you to buy a watch to protect the future of the planet.

Harrison, how can this be?

Apparently, his “Team Earth” crew created the watch to encourage everyone to use less energy via (iconic watchmaker) Hamilton’s new Khaki Team Earth Collection. The watch contains simple design elements that we are to take for eco: “Easily visible khaki-colored numbering stands out against the black background of the dial. Green and brown leather straps allude to the power of Nature, while a stainless steel alternative expresses durability. A Swiss-made automatic movement ETA 2824 and resistance to magnetic fields echo the theme of longevity and sustainability. The case back is closed, engraved with the words, “It’s time to DO,” and signed by Harrison Ford, a timely reminder to all wearers, all of the time.”

Since when does green and brown leather allude to the power of nature? What will the vegans say? Does that mean if I dress up in all green and brown, I, too can be part of Team Earth saving land in South Africa?

The new Hamilton Khaki Team Earth Collection watch, designed in collaboration with Harrison Ford, was created to support a Conservation International (CI) convened coalition called Team Earth. Launched in 2008, funds raised contributed to the protection of 36,000 hectares of critical coastal land in South Africa and 2.6-million hectares in Namibia’s Sperrgebiet National Park, as well as the creation of important protected marine areas in Brazil and Equator.

This is all good. I am applauding for real but under the motto, “It’s time to DO” (the Khaki Team Earth motto) addressing five key issues, beginning with climate change and moving on to water, food, health and waste, I am wondering: How is creating thousands and thousands of new watches helping the planet?

When are celebrities going to realize that they can do good things without pulling in save the planet talk to be trendy? Who are the consultants guiding these notable noses through their careers thinking initiatives like this sound good? Just do it, but don’t expect me to think magnetic fields echo sustainability. Not making watches and just donating some of your own hard earned cash would’ve been cleaner.

Harrison, I will still have fantasies about you, but before the next one, I’m going to have to ask you to take off the watch and lay it on the night stand. Where we’re going, greenwashing is just too dirty for me.
