How To Stop Procrastinating (and Why You Do It!)

Learn how to stop procrastinating by understanding its roots.

I don’t regularly procrastinate but there are those days when I can’t seem to get anything done. Between every post I waste time scrolling through Facebook or Instagram. Then I’ll grab a snack and fold the laundry. And at the end of the day when it appears I’ve gotten little done, I feel crappy about myself. So if something makes me feel so bad, why do I do it?

A video from School of Life shines a light on why you may be procrastinating, claiming that the fear of failure and not succeeding may actually stop you from getting anything done. If you want to know how to stop procrastinating, look deeper.

“I do nothing not because I’m lazy, but because I’m scared,” the timid character in the video says, reported on Huffington Post. “I’m scared that if I start, what I do will be horrible. I want things to be so amazing.”

“What helps the most is when … it feels I could mess up, and that would be okay,” the voice goes on to say. “It’s best not to scare me with perfection.”

While this video takes it to an extreme, pieces of it certainly ring true for me. Certain tasks or longer projects I’ve been working on, I tend to put off because I’m scared they’ll be rejected. The truth hurts sometimes but knowing helps us to overcome feelings that do not serve us.

Do you procrastinate? If so, here are some tips that may help:

1. Do your scariest task first.

If a task often causes feelings of procrastination, don’t allow yourself to put it off. Do it first thing in the morning when you’re the most fresh.

2. Often getting started is the worst part.

Most of us are scared of getting started but once we do, everything starts to come together. Dive in and don’t look back.

3. Have certain allotted time for social media.

Twitter is a must for my job so I don’t count it in this. I need to stay up-to-date on news but Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest are time sucks. If you want to make the most of your day, allow just a few minutes in the morning or evening to scroll through.
