Decor commitment-phobes, you’re in for some fun.
Having been appointed to direct the decoration of my boyfriend’s new eco-friendly house (just wait till he finds out!), I’ve been searching for simple decor ideas that provide an easy way to switch looks throughout the year without a) relying on the pillow refresh, b) spending too much cash on his behalf or c) requiring him to invest in a storage space. I’ve found two great looks that are so fun I’m also going to use them in my own home.
The first idea comes from the excellent Style Files in a discussion about the comeback of lavender walls (finally! validation of my much-derided lavender bedroom of 2006). Now, wallpaper has been the big star of 2008 and eco wallpaper is even better – we’ve seen it here, here, here, here, here and here. But wallpaper is also a commitment.
That’s why I love this headboard vignette pictured above. Purchase some cast-off moldings, paint them any color you like, and you now have a manageable canvas to explore new head-of-bed treatments any time you want. Try out some wallpaper. When you’re sick of that, paint the patch. Try out another scrap of wallpaper. How about stripes? Or a collection of small frames, mirrors, or dishes? It’s not much more difficult – and certainly no less eco-friendly – than switching out pillows. And it’s your own personalized headspace.

Now to idea number 2. If you follow style blogs, then you also know that wallpapering staircases has been a witty trend. Very appealing, but I like the thought of something a little less intensive, like switching out patterned paper under the glass of my kitchen gathering table. I love this scroll table from Crib Candy. But, you could just as easily buy some scrap vintage wallpaper and a sheet of secondhand glass and fashion your own seasonal, eco-friendly table – for a lot less.
