You’ve likely seen bowls of this type before – they’re beautiful, useful and popular. But before stylish varieties of Bamboolicious serve ware can grace your kitchen, it takes Vietnamese artisans in Cat Dang Village up to four months to skillfully craft each one by hand.
This incredibly intensive process begins by stripping down bamboo that has been harvested from sustainable patches, and these segments must be soaked for an entire month. Once they have dried, they are cut down into narrow pieces only a centimeter wide and coiled together to form bowls, trays or plates. Each item is then sanded down to smoothness and a coat of clear varnish is applied. This meticulous process must be repeated thirteen times before the outer shell is painted in an array of earthy hues, including burnt orange, olive and saffron.
