With all the recent health news about whole grains, it turns out that the spirit as well as the body may benefit from eating them in some form. In the case of battling the blues effectively, oatmeal is an excellent nutritional weapon. In addition to being a filling yet low-fat and high-fiber comfort food, oats possess antidepressant properties and can serve as a tonic for the nerves. Oats are valuable both as an antidote to depression and are wonderfully restorative after illness. This unusual tisane combines oatstraw with the tangy taste of vervain, also known to fortify the nervous system and combat depression. Oatstraw, made from the whole plant, which has been dried and chopped, is usually available in the herb section of natural food stores. Rolled oats will work nicely, as well.
“The Blues” Tisane
– ½ teaspoon dried oatstraw
– ½ teaspoon dried vervain leaves
– 1 cup purified water
– honey, to taste
If you’re using oatstraw, combine the herbs. Bring the water to a boil. Pour over the herbs and allow to steep for up to 10 minutes. If using rolled oats, allow to steep for twenty minutes. Strain, add a bit of honey, and drink while still hot.
