As a textile artist, I’m a big proponent of what I call Slow Cloth – textiles and garments that respect the rich galaxy of traditional textile techniques, that are made by hand and not by factories, that sustain the makers, and that are informed with modern creativity and style.
In Momentum, my local Fair Trade boutique, I happened on some stunning products that fill the bill. They were made by Creative Women, a Vermont-based, women-owned company that works with weavers in Ethiopia and Swaziland to create bags, table runners, pillows, wall hangings, wraps and throws. The lightweight Ethiopian cotton throws and blankets will take the chill off a spring evening; the wall hangings will add a tribal feel to your home or office.
These are exquisite pieces; in some, unusual fibers like mohair and raffia enhance the traditional African weaving techniques in contemporary interpretations. Best of all, this award-laden organization provides jobs and independence for African women and helps sustain these beautiful cultures and countries.
