The Happiness Secret: You Already Have It

What's the secret to happiness? You might be surprised to find you already have it.

While backpacking around South America a few seasons ago, I really had to get down to bare essentials. I had to decide which clothes would be most practical and easiest to carry, choose one good book to read, edit my art supplies, and make room for a small camera. Other than that, my life’s joys relied on what I experienced all around me rather than what I possessed.

That experience brought me to a state of enjoying what I already have. I remember that I decided to take along one dressy blouse for special dinners, and when I wore it I felt so beautiful - it was my only one! Rather than having a whole closet full of “nothing to wear,” I graciously reworked my one pretty blouse and rocked it like it was haute couture.

Appreciation for what you already have is a major step along the path to contentment. That doesn’t mean you have to stop pursuing your dreams and your goals, but if you can't relish what you currently have - a representation of who you are right now - how do you know you’ll ever find happiness?

This baby just might have it figured out.
