Eco Links to Green your Weekend

-

-Here’s one way you definitely don’t want to be “perc’d” up. Tetrachloroethylene or perc (from “perchloroethylene”) is a recognised menace, and for all our sakes we need to steer clear of it when we’re dry cleaning. Lighter Footstep has a handy 11-point guide to alternatives that nicely complements Sarah’s suggestion that wet cleaning is the healthy way forward.

-Christmas is just round the corner – and right now, there’s no such thing as too many gift ideas. So here’s a few more, courtesy of The Cabin!

-Elevated levels of energy, health and wellbeing via chocolate? Where do I sign? (Thanks, Abigail Lewis at Lime).

-Back in September, ecoAmerica ran an article on how the climate change deniers are still making their voices heard. What we’re wondering now is if, in the wake of President Elect Obama’s statement on the subject, they’re still being so vocal.

-We all know that recycling is ethically the right thing to do – but in the times we live in, is it practical? Popular Mechanics tackles this question head-on.

-Perhaps you haven’t heard of peridotite yet. We expect you will – because it’s a rock that soaks up carbon dioxide (and converts it to calcite). Now we’re waiting for the development of an artificial version that can make a greenhouse-busting building material…

-But even if we soak up atmospheric CO2, there’s still the problem of overpopulation. And on a subject close to my heart, Live Science outline the only real answer – bolstered by increasing evidence that our own solar system is most definitely not alone.

-Visions of the future or flights of deluded fancy? WebUrbanist’s 24 green wonders of the future will challenge your sensibilities and drop your jaw to the ground – but will they actually get built? In the case of the Star City, I’d be very surprised if future populations want their planet surface covered in  mile-high caltrops.

-Living sustainably is very much about being an individual. And since there’s nobody quite like you, why do things like everyone else does? Take a look at these unconventional ideas over at The Art Of Nonconformity – and then come up with your own.

-Clean renewable energy generation is the way to meet our future energy requirements…but the likes of windfarms and fields of solar panelling are a little intrusive. For people wanting to keep their sweeping landscapes unadorned with technology, Green Upgrader’s news on seabed energy will be very welcome. (Deep sea divers may be less impressed).

-How do you feel about the $25 billion bailout plan for the American auto industry, paid by your taxes? As Max Gladwell notes, the general public don’t seem impressed (if YouTube is any judge).

-It’s difficult to turn around and look your lifestyle right in the eye. But it’s empowering, it’s ethical and it’s the road to saving oodles of cash. So try this exercise. Look at the set of questions at the end of Wisebread’s Look Waste In The Face article, and answer them truthfully.

-Could prefab homes be hotter at the moment? Take these 9 examples over at StyleCrave. (But…where are the curves, as in The Orb we featured a while back? More natural geometry, thanks).

-Strawberry Hedgehog (a.k.a. Tracy Perkins) has a new range of holiday soaps on offer – including spiced cider. (If you’ve tried any of these soaps before, you’re already there. ‘Nuff said).

-And lastly, a world-saving strategy for people as bone-idle as myself – How To Do Less. In fact it’s less about laziness and more about simplifying…so where else would it be than over at Zen Habits?

Hope you’re having a great weekend, everyone!
