Typical of our hustle-bustle culture is the idea of moving forward with a destination, a purpose. But upon entering a Labyrinth, you realize the only destination is the center, with every spiraling turn bringing you back to a place where you have already been. The Labyrinth is a metaphor for life.
A Labyrinth is not a maze but an ancient symbol of wholeness. There are no dead-ends and you don’t have to search for the secret exit. When I walk the Labyrinth, I feel relief, knowing that I don’t have to make any decisions with a right or wrong answer. All I have to do is walk consciously, contemplative of what symbolizes a journey to the center of my self.
Many retreats and spiritual centers feature Labyrinths. If you don’t have a walking Labyrinth available, you can print out the design and trace it with your fingers. As long as you are mindful and contemplative – not rushing to “reach the destination" – the soothing effect upon your spirit and psyche will be the same.
