If being super fit and thin were a prerequisite for all jobs, many of us would be in deep trouble. Such is the life of a Victoria’s Secret model, though. Those women certainly don’t have to sweat body image, right? What one former Angel has to say on the subject of body issues might make you think again.
You’d think that out of any job in the world, a Victoria’s Secret model would never have to feel a bit heavy on the scale. Well, guess what? Turns out these women are real live people too. Former VS angel, Erin Heatherton, decided enough was enough after being told (three consecutive years, no less) that she needed to … get this, LOSE WEIGHT! Wtf?
As the model told TIME Magazine’s Motto, “I was really depressed because I was working so hard and I felt like my body was resisting me.” She was working out twice every day and not seeing the results she was after, and considered skipping meals to get there. All for a job that perpetuates body image issues in young girls and women alike.
If you look at Erin walking the VS runway, she is certainly not in need of dropping a few. Thank goodness she came to her senses and strutted her perfectly beautiful body away from Victoria’s Secret. The pressure on her to “fulfill the demands of perfectionism” taught the model to lover herself the way she is. Erin now works to encourage women to “become the truest version of themselves.”
It is scary that girls and women are holding themselves to these standards. If it is unattainable for a Victoria’s Secret model, then young women certainly should not be idolizing this image. And Erin is not the only celeb to feel the heat.
Some of you may scoff at the idea of a gorgeous model learning to accept her body the way it is. But it simply shows the body image struggle is very real, and has little to do with how you look. It’s all about how you feel.
