Before You Bust A Move, Pick Up Your Psychic Telephone

How to use your psychic powers on mice and men.

I was working for an organization in New Mexico. Our office was an old compound of adobe buildings, off a bumpy side road, by a field. One summer, we were overrun with mice.

We couldn’t do traps. Cruel. Messy. Yuck. The humane traps (Mister Mouse crawls into a plastic house and a door shuts. He waits to be picked up. You then drive Mister Mouse forty nine miles away and set him free.) Not very practical when you’re dealing with an …

Places & Spaces: Adrère Amellal, Cairo, Egypt

Merging perfectly with the environment, Adrere Amellal in Cairo, Egypt is a magical place for those seeking a quiet sanctuary.

To say that Adrère Amellal is “absolutely fascinating” seems, to us, a bit of an understatement. The truth is we were in complete awe when we came across this sandcastle-looking eco-lodge in Cairo, Egypt. It’s like stepping back in time, replete with breathtaking open views of a shimmering and pristine Siwa Lake and the Sahara Desert. Electricity has been banned, so guests must use oil lamps, candles, and the moonlight to …

Anna Karenina? I Thought of That.

ColumnBeen there, thought that.

Several months ago, Kimberly Clark announced that they would begin manufacturing a line of eco-friendly toilet paper. The paper would be produced without an internal cardboard tube, and could, conceivably, save millions of pounds of trash each year.  Toilet paper, by definition, is thoroughly and inarguably disposable, so finding a way to reduce its environmental impact is an astounding feat. And yet, I reacted to the news of this development with annoyance, feeling  somehow that I had been this close to coming up with that very idea. …

Royal Vintage Exhibit An Inside Look At Swedish Royalty

Stockholm’s Royal Vintage exhibit gives us an inside look at Swedish Royalty.

Most girls dream of someday getting to play dress-up inside the closet of a real-life princess. Perhaps getting to peek into it would be a close second, and that’s exactly what a show at the Royal Armory in Stockholm lets us do. Entitled Royal Vintage, it’s a showcase of dresses worn by the women of the Swedish royal family, from the early 1900s up until today, with a …

Lustables: Animal Farm Glasses

These Animal Farm tumblers are made from recycled wine bottles and we, well are lusting.

The pig said “oink.” The sheep went “baaaa.” The cow sighed “moo” and these tumblers make us go, “ah.” Both whimsical and irresistible, no two cows are ever the same. That’s because they’re hand-sketched on glass made from recycled wine bottles. A portion of the proceeds from sales of the Animal Farm glasses goes to the environmental non-profit Sustainable Futures, who also provided the bottles.

Look for Lustables daily at EcoSalon.

ColumnAre you willing to shop package free?

If you’re reading this you probably bring your own reusable bags to the grocery store. Maybe you even wash out your plastic produce bags until they’re in tatters. But how far are you willing to go down the no-packaging road?

If the Brothers Lane in Austin, TX have their way, you’ll eschew packaging all together and buy everything in bulk. You’ll bring cloth bags or pre-weighed plastic or glass containers to In.gredients, the store they plan to open this fall in East Austin. …

Current Style Trends: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

A hobble skirt, the perfect thing for dubious domestic duties.

Pencil skirts – How can a fashion essential, every wardrobe’s tall drink of water, be a new trend, you ask? Did you see Sarah Jessica Parker in this month’s “Age” issue of Vogue? Looking divine (and disturbingly airbrushed for an issue on “Age…”), she was photographed by Mario Testino in various domestic settings with Matthew Broderick and her kids wearing Marc Jacobs, Chanel and Proenza Schouler’s mid-calf length pencil skirts. While the mid-calf lengths were a trend for Spring 2011, seeing them …
