Taming the Tannic Beast

Once in a while it happens: a third decadent Kir Royale or that Pinot Noir with a bit too much personality. Fudging your normally healthy habits, you drank too much, you didn’t drink water between cocktails and you’re feeling miserable the next day.

Ouch. While the most healthy plan is always prevention, fortunately, there are a few natural ways you can help relieve the nausea and headache of an accidental hangover.

First and foremost, it’s important to rehydrate your body, so drink plenty of water, preferably with lime, which stabilizes your blood sugar and give you much needed minerals. Tomato juice helps the alcohol move more quickly through your system and ginger or peppermint tea will soothe your stomach. If you can handle it, try a banana-honey smoothie with a pinch of sea salt, which also helps stabilize your blood sugar and electrolytes.

For headaches, give yourself a vigorous scalp massage, even pulling at your hair in clumps; this stimulates blood flow to the scalp. Raw cabbage and persimmon (although not necessarily together!) are folk remedies for headaches.
