Here’s how to get beachy waves – minus the beach.
Who doesn’t love the effortless, laid-back look of beachy waves? They’re super-easy to create and achievable for practically every hair type. It’s a timeless hairstyle that will never lose its luster – best of all, you can score this look in the comfort of your own home.
“Any woman whose hair is past their collar bone to mid-back has a perfect length to achieve beachy waves,” says hair expert and celebrity stylist Jin Bang. “It takes a little more prep work for ladies with straight hair, but it’s still a very achievable look.”
Courtesy of Bang, here’s how to get beachy waves and that boho chic look in 5 simple steps:
What You’ll Need
- A light, non-greasy pomade like Neuma Style Texturizer
- Learn how to do a three-strand dutch braid or french braid
- A diffuser
Step 1
Saturate your hair with water from root to tip.
Step 2
Apply the amount of pomade necessary for your hair type. For example, if you have kinky/frizzy hair that’s dense from living in a humid area, apply pomade to your whole head. If you have medium to light waves, lightly apply pomade everywhere but your roots: This will give you volume and won’t weigh your hair down.
Step 3
Decide how big you want your beachy waves to be. This will help determine how many braids you’ll need: More braids equals more waves, while less equals a softer look. Once you’ve decided, braid your hair accordingly.

Step 4
Attach the diffuser to your blowdryer, putting it on high heat and medium/low power. Only heat the braids from mid-to-ends of your hair and let your roots dry naturally. If you don’t have a natural wave, let your hair dry thoroughly before taking the braids out. If you have wavy/curly hair, it’s okay to let out your braids when your hair still has a bit of dampness to it.
Step 5
Slowly shake out your braids until you’re at your desired level of beachy waves. Apply a penny-sized dollop of pomade to shape and mold your beachy waves to perfection.
Voila! Are beachy waves your go-to summer look?
