What Your Dentist Knows

Grinding your teeth. Clenching your jaw. Sensitive gums. Facial pain and headaches.

Your dentist has a name for this: bruxism. And your dentist will probably want you to wear a night guard to protect your teeth from wear. That’s great for symptomatic relief, but it doesn’t address the underlying cause of bruxism: stress.

Chronic stress is a big issue and affects the body in countless ways, and it’s good to find relief not just for the sake of your teeth, but for your whole being.

Tips for stress relief:

-If you’re sedentary, get active. Yoga! Dance! Run! Walk! Bike! Sing! Paint! Kickbox! You need to move your body around to let go of the tension that builds up from sitting all day.
-If you’re rushed and frenetic, be still. Take time for a sauna, a massage or a meditation. Try a meditation podcast to help you focus and slow down your mind.
-Simplify your life. Take a clear look at your “to do” list and prioritize. Don’t be afraid to let go of what no longer works.
-Do the right thing. Stress, anxiety and frustration can plague if you’ve been talking yourself into doing something you know you really shouldn’t. Look honestly at your career path, your relationships, and your lifestyle. If your heart and mind are in conflict, don’t be surprised that your body will take on the tension.
