Just as an empty stomach needs food for nutrition, so too do our souls need nourishment. As the old adage says, “a man (or woman) cannot live on bread alone." Well, we can’t live on exercise and vitamins alone, either. We really need to take our souls into account because that part of us can starve too.
Without going too deep into spiritual matters, I’d like to venture what “food for the soul” really is. First of all, it’s whatever gets you passionate and excited. If you’re following your bliss, your soul is full to the brim. Doing what you love ultimately makes you happy.
Soul food also consists of those wonderful intangibles like music and art. Walking in nature and absorbing the gorgeousness of the landscape does wonders for a weary soul (whereas counting how many calories you burn per mile does not). How about helping out a friend in need? It’s different for everybody but anything that opens your heart, makes you smile, and makes you wonder at the mystery of life beyond what your eyes can see – that’s health food for the soul.
